16-18th November 2013, More short walks but plenty to enjoy

Still limited to short walks near home at the moment but at least the weather was kind over the weekend. I decided to have a walk around my home valley of Airedale on Saturday and it was a great delight to find some fieldfares back and feeding, they are still very nervous but will become easier to approach as they stay longer.

This wonderful oak tree is a fixture (literally) on my walks around here...

Robins are becoming very prominent with their cheerful songs ringing out from fences, trees and buildings...

A look westwards up the valley provided some lovely colours...

A rabbit basked in the sunshine, though it wasn't very warm!

Goldfinches are another very visible bird at the moment, often in groups though this one seemed happy enough with its own company.

Heading out to the east of Silsden I found a chaffinch posing...

A juvenile swan went all bashful on me :-)

Leaving the canal towpath I used a lovely little lane to return to town, the trees and bushes that surround the lane often yield good bird sightings. Today I could see large groups of long tailed tits, feeding and moving around almost non stop, I had time enough in hand to wait a while, and a while longer and still more! Eventually I found one willing to stay still long enough for me to get a decent photograph..

I didn't have a lot of time on Sunday but managed another canal walk, the light was dreadful but it was dry and a little warmer.

My first sighting was a robin perched on a fence...

The chattering, rattling alarm call of a wren alerted me and I paused by the tree from which the noise emanated. I focused the camera lens on the area where the noise seemed to be and waited, sure enough eventually a wren emerged into a clear view for me.

And a bonus too as its mate emerged too...

With a little time for another short wander on Monday I decided on Rombalds Moor as my destination, straight away a red grouse on a wall top although the sun was in the wrong place to capture the colours well.

The views up Wharfedale were beautiful...

Another grouse offered a better angle...

Up the valley and towards Lancashire the skies were dramatic...

And finally as we relaxed in the evening a lovely moon shone brightly...

As always, many thanks to all who read and comment, don't forget the comments come to me first for approval. Many thanks to new reader Tom who has corrected some of my uninformed though enthusiastic identifications of insects and dragonflies, I continue to learn :-))

19-26th June 2013, Making the most of the weather

With a poor weather forecast for the weekend, I decided to get out for a couple of hours on Wednesday evening while the sun was shining, almost like a diner expecting the main course to be a let down...make the most of the starter!

I headed up to Silsden Moor, a jackdaw with its bright green eye featured along the way..

Part of the route was an old Roman Road, the going is easy...moving off path through felled trees and very uneven ground liberally scattered with brambles needs care but the reward of the cotton grass is worthwhile..

Settling in as comfortable a place as I could manage I scanned round with the binoculars, I could hear plenty of birdsong...and then a dog like bark, repeatedly..a lovely roe deer buck appeared.

One opportunity for a photograph and he bounded away still barking, a grand sight,

One of the invisible chorus revealed itself, a lovely redpoll perched on a treetop.

I explored further, taking care not to snag myself too often..nor to sink into any of the various streams which burble invisibly beneath the feet!

The warm sunshine made up for the lack of photograhic opportunities and time passed easily, gaining the track again a rarely seen animal made be concentrate, a gorgeous hare...

It seemed not to notice me at first, when it did it moved pretty swiftly away and I followed carefully.

Creeping through the long grass I was lucky to get another shot..

A cracking end to a super short walk.

The poor forecast for the weekend duly obliged, we had plans slightly differing from our usual wildlife excursions.

On Saturday our daughter, her partner and our eldest grand-daughter, aged 10, were due to tackle the Yorkshire Three Peaks walk on a planned school trip.

The ascent of Pen y ghent (694m) Whernside (736) and finally Ingleborough (723m) 23.5 miles and over 1600metres of ascent and descent in under twelve hours is the challenge. They had prepared thoroughly with some walks of increasing difficulty and distance, could they succeed.

We drove up there in early afternoon, the weather had looked dire on the forecast, although Pen y ghent was clear as we passed. Having done the walk several times myself I had a rough idea where we may catch a glimpse of them if all was going well. Descending Whernside, pictured below, there is a road section where cars may be parked.

We met the school support team who advised us they were going well and had passed Ribblehead Viaduct at a good speed, the weather was clearing and things were looking good!

Pretty soon they appeared, all walking well, some pretty desperate levels of rain and wind had been encountered, after a reviving cup of tea and some changed socks off they went Ingleborough bound.

I was dropped off at Horton in Ribblesdale while Mrs Wildlife and our youngest grand-daughter ferried a young lad who had to drop out back to Silsden. A short riverbank walk to pass the time and then I esconced myself in the beer garden of a pub which overlooks the finishing stretch.

In due course they appeared and I somewhat proudly accompanied them to the finish, a magnificent time of 9 hours 50 minutes!! The hillwalking baton has been passed :-))

More poor weather on Sunday, it was late in the afternoon when we managed a very short canalbank walk, a lovely cygnet came very close..

I like to capture quirky shots, especially of things I often see...the large feet of a moorhen come in handy when it has a hard to reach itch!

Regular walks on this stretch of canal allow us to see the changes, sometimes not noticeable to the casual visitor, the way the foliage changes, bird behaviour and other seasonal changes.

Flocks of long tailed tits flittered to and fro, extremely difficult to capture on camera but I don't give up easily and managed a decent photograph.

The mallard chicks get so used to people they approach amazingly near with no fear whatsoever..

And so to the return of a favourite...towards the end of last year I was rewarded for my time spent searching on here by some fantastic kingfisher sightings....as soon as the winter temperatures freeze the water though they disappear, probably to the nearby river where foliage and the width make sightings and photographs much more difficult.

Our walk on Sunday had yielded a brief sighting so some optimism was felt as we perused the canalside trees...success!

Not the greatest shots as it stubbornly refused to come out of the shadows, but at least I know they are back.

Swallows perched on tree twiglets in the evening sun..

All in all a lovely evening!

I returned the following night, poor light was not helpful and I only had one sighting of a kingfisher and that was in flight.

I did get some heron sightings, not all of them palatable if you are not used to ways that wildlife predates on the weakest in order to survive. It was hunting in the reeds and making occasional forays to successfully seize tiny ducklings, one of the many reasons why a brood of maybe twelve quickly is reduced to two or three.

Worry not, I chose not to photograph those activities, choosing to get shots of the more usual poses.

I found a pied wagtail with fledgling in close attendance..

And finally the heron again, for the technically minded this was taken in very low light, a shutter speed of 1/7th of a second so not sharp, fortunately the heron stayed still and allowed a lovely effect on the water,

All in all a pretty good week, despite the weather!

Thanks to all who read, much appreciated and don't forget comments come to me for moderation first.

6-8th April 2013, Spring arrives for a couple of days

The weather forecast for the weekend promised sunshine and warmer temperatures, trusting the forecast I set the alarm for an early start and headed over to Bolton Abbey in Wharfedale before the sun rose.

The sun was just beginning to show over the hills as I set out...

A few days of dry weather had firmed up the paths nicely and the joys of spring were all too obvious as I walked with a symphony of birdsong to accompany me. From the haunting calls of lapwing and curlew on the hillsides to the merry "yaffling" of a green woodpecker and the drumming of a great spotted woodpecker with melodic interventions of the robin it was just wonderful!

First decent bird sighting of the day was an oystercatcher..

Mandarin ducks, originally escapees but now firmly established here...

The Wharfe is a great place to see dippers, I caught the pose of this one well, unfortunately it was in a shaded area and the colours are not as clear as I would have hoped.

As I wandered onwards the strident and insistent call of a wren demanded attention, not the biggest bird but among the loudest!

And then for contrast the delicate colours and soft call of the grey wagtail...

In another month or so the woods will be full of birdlife with many special species due to return soon, the repetitive call of the male chaffinch was the dominant sound on this stretch...

Another wren played hide and seek and refused to appear completely for my lens!!
I ventured off path as I was watching a nuthatch which I failed to photograph successfully, I was in camouflage clothing which came in very handy as I heard movement through the trees. Moving very carefully I managed to get within about 10 yards of this lovely roe deer...

Regaining the path I looked out over the adjoining fields, a distant curlew....

And a pair of lapwing in display flight...

I witnessed the comical behaviour of a great spotted woodpecker as it landed and then saw me, it peeped first from one side of a tree then the other...great fun:-)

It was time to head homewards now, after some lunch I had a walk by the Leeds Liverpool canal near home...once again the path was much improved:-)

I have a favoured spot on here where there is some tangled and thorny undergrowth, the warmth of the sun was obviously to the liking of this cute robin as it basked blissfully..

My standard shot of Nab End, Rombalds Moor as I walked toward Silsden..

There were no kingfishers to be seen today, but I'll see them again if I am patient. The greylag geese seem as happy in the fields as on the water..

By the edge of town a swan came close, I used the camera settings to get this muted effect...

And finally for the day....a robin proclaims that spring is finally here....

And a moorhen does some sprucing up:-))

A great day to be out enjoying the warm sunshine.

On Sunday we had some jobs to do at home, after several hours of successfully assembling some bedroom furniture I felt the need for a short walk to loosen my joints! One of my favourite local walks for occasions like this takes me through some farmland, I often wonder if people think I am strange as I peruse walltops through my binoculars! There is a good reason, walltops are a favourite perching place for little owls and occasionally I am successful in my perusal:-)

Knowledge of habitat is really important to finding the wildlife you seek.

I returned to Bolton Abbey on Monday for another short walk, another grey wagtail offered an opportunity for a photograph, nearly good but the focus was not quite correct...

A pair of goosanders were taking a break on some rocks in the water, male and female respectively..

A small tributary stream is often visited, the light lends itself to slow shutter speed shots of the lovely cascades..

I had packed some lunch and as I enjoyed a sandwich and a cup of coffee a lovely mallard appeared, strangely it  wasn't the coffee it was interested in!!!

All in all a decent weekend........................
